Editing Services Offered
While I edit all sorts of documents—fiction, memoirs, web content, press releases, manuscripts, screenplays, academic texts—there are several types of editing involved. You may want one or more of the following edits:
Manuscript Evaluation / Development: For fiction and non-fiction, this process helps authors articulate their goals and attain them. Authors will receive detailed comments on technical skill, clarity, and style, as well as determining how best to engage their intended audience. Authors will be advised on the steps necessary to develop their manuscript as well as responses to specific concerns they may have. This is especially helpful for self-publishing.
Copy Editing: This ensures consistency and accuracy throughout a document. Copy editing includes checking grammar, punctuation, spelling, usage, and basic fact checking. A copy edit will create consistent expression of numerals, mechanics, and formatting, in addition to checking web links. A copy editor may create a style sheet for consistency or use one that the client prefers.
Print to Web Conversion: Readers engage with documents very differently on screen than in print. Content needs to be adjusted to minimize scrolling and to separate and highlight the main points for maximum visual impact and ease of reading.
Additional Services:
Structural Editing: Typically for longer documents, this involves re-ordering and organizing material. Suggestions may be made for clarification of thematic elements and goals and may include recommendations for writing new sections of text. Texts that will be adapted from print to web form may need a structural edit. Structural editing is also known as substantive editing or developmental editing. See also Manuscript Evaluation/ Development above.
Stylistic Editing: This step clarifies language, eliminates jargon, and presents a unified voice and formality appropriate for the text’s intended audience. Paragraphs and visual elements may be edited for overall consistency.
Fact Checking: This includes checking the accuracy of dates, names, dollar amounts, and historical background. A fact-checked document promotes credibility while reducing liability.
Re-writing: This is offered for non-fiction only.
See Fees for pricing on all types of editing.
